Making self care spaces inclusive for fat folx.

Hey Folx,

If you're taking the time to read this I thank you. I have wanted to put my thoughts to paper for a very long time and finally, the ADHD hyperfocus gods have allowed me.

If you don't know me, My name is Lan đŸ‘‹đŸ» I'm a Non-Binary remedial massage therapist and personal trainer here in Fife with a background in contact sports, weightlifting and bodybuilding. Today's blog post comes after a conversation with a friend about how difficult it can be for fat folx to feel safe enough to enter self-care spaces such as Massage therapists, Spa, gyms, salons etc.

The most common thing I hear in my clinic space is " Will your table support my weight" the answer is always yes. I have a table that is built to support and has had rugby players hopping off and on it over the years. Those aren't slight and slender people. How do I make the space inviting and comfortable? -

Firstly, I ask you some questions about how you would prefer to lie, not everyone can lie on their tummy and that is totally fine. I will give you the option to lie on your front or your side whichever is best for you. You even get to try one and then switch if needed.

Then I break out the pillows and fluffy blankets. These allow me to support your body as you lay in order to make sure your joints are happy and not taking on too much strain as we start the treatment, for example, a pillow between the knees. If we need to adjust something you just let me know and we make it work :D The second thing I'll do is ask if there are any areas that are off-limits, If you don't want me to massage certain places please don't be afraid to say. The treatment is 100% yours and I'm just the vessel through which the relaxation flows haha. If you have any questions or concerns about how your treatment may go as a fat, disabled or gender non-conforming human, please always drop me an email in advance and we can have a little chat about your needs - Lan@peakpbodywork.com
